Many academic institutions recognize professional certifications as part of prior learning assessments (PLA) and competency-based education programs. While BlueCert™ cannot guarantee that any institution will grant credit for our certifications, we provide credit hour recommendations based on standard academic evaluation criteria.
Candidates are encouraged to consult their academic advisors and reference our recommendations when inquiring about transfer credit eligibility.
BlueCert™ follows industry-recognized frameworks to evaluate certification-to-credit alignment. Our methodology considers:
We also align our evaluations with the federal definition of a credit hour, which includes “one hour of classroom instruction and two hours of out-of-class work per week over approximately fifteen weeks.” This model, sometimes referred to as the Carnegie Unit, provides a baseline for determining instructional equivalency. By applying this framework, we can estimate the learning effort embedded in each certification and support transparent credit transfer conversations with academic institutions.
Our recommended academic credit equivalency is based on a competency-based approach. Rather than focusing solely on instructional hours, we estimate the average amount of time a learner would need to gain sufficient knowledge and proficiency to successfully pass a given BlueCert™ certification. This includes time spent studying, practicing skills, completing hands-on projects, and reviewing exam materials. The resulting recommendation provides a realistic measure of learning effort that institutions can use when evaluating credit for prior learning.
